“As in the universe, so in the home: everything around us is in constant motion, in a subtle dance between elements that define the harmony of our existence.”
Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese art of harmonisation, teaches us that space is not static.
It is governed by the Five Energies (Wu Xing): Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. These are not physical elements, but energetic phases that describe the movement of life.
Understanding these forces enables you to rebalance your home, transforming it into an ally for your wellbeing.
Each element has specific qualities which, when properly balanced, support our potential.
Wood is the energy of birth and becoming. It is an upward-moving life force, like a sprout breaking through the earth.
Qualities: Versatility, optimism, idealism, growth.
When in excess: Restlessness, excessive competitiveness, frustration, inability to sit still.
When deficient: Lack of motivation, chronic fatigue, narrow-mindedness, difficulty planning for the future.
Tip: To stimulate this energy, use living wood (real plants), natural fabrics (cotton, linen) and vertical stripes.
Fire is the energy of the highest expression. It is the only energy that moves upwards ceaselessly.
Qualities: Charisma, passion, intuition, joy, brilliant intelligence.
When in excess: Anxiety, nervousness, hyperactivity, conflict, insomnia.
When deficient: Lack of enthusiasm, emotional coldness, shyness, difficulty communicating.
Tip: Introduce Fire through appropriate lighting (warm-coloured lamps), candles or objects in warm tones (red, orange, fuchsia).
Earth is the energy of stillness and balance. It represents the centre, nourishment, and the point of pause between one phase and the next.
Qualities: Stability, reliability, patience, pragmatism, nourishment.
When in excess: Laziness, excessive worry, resistance to change, a sense of ‘heaviness’.
When deficient: Scattered, lack of grounding (feeling ‘suspended’), difficulty in completing tasks.
Tip: Use natural materials such as stone, ceramics and exposed brick. Square shapes and earthy tones (sand, ochre, terracotta) are ideal.
Metal is the energy of harvest and refinement. It represents the ability to extract the essence from things, eliminating the superfluous.
Qualities: Discipline, precision, integrity, a sense of justice, mental order.
When in excess: Rigidity, intolerance, cynicism, obsessive perfectionism.
When deficient: Disorder, indecisiveness, mental confusion, weakness of character.
Tip: Enhance Metal with metal objects (brass, steel, silver), mirrored surfaces, glass and circular or elliptical shapes.
Water is the energy of depth and potential. It is where everything originates and where everything returns to rest.
Qualities: Wisdom, intuition, introspection, adaptability, fluidity.
When in excess: Melancholy, apathy, emotional confusion, a feeling of being ‘overwhelmed’ by events.
When deficient: Mental rigidity, lack of creativity, inability to go with the flow of change.
Tip: Use sinuous and irregular shapes, mirrors, water features (real or decorative) and shades of deep blue or black.
The secret of Feng Shui does not lie in randomly piling up every element, but in cultivating a harmonious cycle of generation, in which each form of energy nourishes and sustains the next in an unbroken chain of regeneration.
This dynamic balance, known as the cycle of generation, allows Qi (vital energy) to flow naturally through your spaces, preventing blockages or stagnation.
Wood fuels Fire: Just as burning wood feeds the flame, this transition ignites vitality, passion and creativity within a space.
Fire creates ash (Earth): The transformation of heat leaves behind ash, which becomes nourishment for the earth, stabilising and grounding the energy of the space.
Earth generates Metal: It is in the depths of the earth that metals form and crystallise; this transition brings order, precision and mental clarity.
Metal retains Water: As metal cools, it can condense moisture, allowing the energy of water to flow, adapt and reflect our inner wisdom.
Water nourishes Wood: Water is the lifeblood that allows the seed to sprout and the plant to grow, bringing the cycle full circle and fostering new projects and dreams.
My Method: Creating Harmony between Forces
In my work as an interior designer, I analyse this balance to transform your space:
Energy Reading: I assess whether your environment is stagnant (a lack of Wood) or overly stimulating (an excess of Fire).
Tailored Approach: We don’t overhaul the décor; we make small changes — a colour, a texture or a design element — to rebalance the vibrations of your home and your mind.
Holistic Integration: The aim is to harmonise the space so that it is not only pleasing to the eye, but deeply restorative for those who live there.
Often, the feeling of being stuck in our daily lives reflects an imbalance in the energies around us.
Beginning to understand the 5 Energies means embarking on a journey towards a new awareness, where every corner of your home once again radiates a sense of wellbeing and harmony.
