“Light is the first of colours, the first of rhythms, the first of silences.”
– Le Corbusier
In an age when we spend most of our time indoors, we have often become disconnected from the rhythms of the sun, which have guided our biology for millennia.
Biophilic lighting was developed to bridge this disconnect, bringing the dynamic quality of natural light into our indoor spaces.
More than just a choice of light fittings, biophilic lighting is a design strategy that replicates the dynamics of the sun within indoor spaces.
Our bodies are biologically programmed to respond to natural light stimuli: light, in fact, is not a static element, but a living flow that marks the passage of time.
The aim is to support the circadian rhythm — our biological clock — through light that varies in intensity and temperature throughout the day.
In the morning and during the middle of the day, cooler spectral components and greater intensity stimulate serotonin, promoting concentration and vitality.
As sunset approaches, the light shifts towards warm, soft tones, signalling to the nervous system to produce melatonin, the hormone essential for restorative sleep.
The Pillars of Radiant Wellbeing
Light that mimics the brightness of dawn in the morning and the soft warmth of sunset in the evening helps to regulate melatonin production, dramatically improving the quality of sleep and daytime productivity.
Science confirms that light patterns that mimic natural patterns reduce cortisol levels, promoting deep mental regeneration.
A carefully designed light does more than simply provide illumination; it enhances forms and materials, transforming the space from a static setting into a vibrant and welcoming environment.
Light is not just a means of seeing, but a powerful messenger for our bodies.
Our bodies are programmed to respond to the changes in light over the course of a 24-hour period.
Daylight, which is rich in cool-toned light, stimulates serotonin, boosting our alertness and vitality
Exposure to warm evening light signals to the nervous system that it is time to produce melatonin, which is essential for restorative sleep.
Environments with flat or unnatural artificial light create a disconnect between our surroundings and our ancestral rhythms, causing mental fatigue and stress.
My Method: Light and Salogenesis
In my work, lighting is one of the cornerstones of bespoke design. I do not merely provide lighting: I use light as a tool of Salogenesis – that is, a form of design that actively promotes health.
By incorporating the principles of Feng Shui, I study the orientation of windows and the placement of artificial light sources to ensure that the vital energy (Qi) is not obstructed.
Lighting thus becomes an act of mindful care, in which every choice is aimed at fostering balance between people, space and nature.
Light is the soul of a home.
A bespoke design can radically transform your daily life, re-energising you every time you step through the door.
